Who can attend a TVET college?
As part of the Higher Education system, TVET Colleges accept students who’ve completed Grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 at the high school level. University post-graduates can also enroll in courses at TVET Colleges for more practical exposure.
A big benefit of attending a TVET college is the high focus on the employability of students where part of the curriculum requires the students to complete experiential training (internships and apprenticeships) which helps build up experience on your CV.
Not all colleges offer the same courses. It’s a good idea to first do some research on courses offered by colleges which interest you. Courses are usually in the fields of; hospitality, food service, and tourism industries, haircare, early childhood development, management (financial, human resource, marketing, administration) to mention a few.
There are 50 TVET colleges across South Africa, of which 6 are located in the Western Cape. This means that almost every major region in the Western Cape has a TVET College campus. The courses on offer are accredited and independently monitored to ensure that they meet quality standards as well as accredited by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This means that the quality of education and training is internationally benchmarked.
