Play is one of the most important and powerful ways for young children to learn. From birth to age six, the brain is growing at a rapid pace, and playful learning experiences provide the opportunity to foster young children’s development in key cognitive, physical, and social-emotional areas. Play at a young age yields enormous benefits, laying the foundation for children to become creative and engaged lifelong learners.
In 2018, Sesame Workshop and the LEGO Foundation launched Takalani Sesame Play to Learn, a ground-breaking initiative to promote the power of learning through play in South Africa. The partnership combines the LEGO Foundation’s commitment to and expertise in learning through play with Sesame’s proven educational content development model and media expertise.
Job Title: Provincial Coordinator
Location: South Africa
Building on the appeal and proven impact of Takalani Sesame, the initiative will be implemented in Eastern Cape, Free State and Gauteng provinces to equip parents, caregivers and educators with knowledge and skills to facilitate educational play for children.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Provincial Coordinator to play a key role in the development and execution of the Takalani Sesame Play to Learn initiative in the Free State Province.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Project Coordination: Work closely with the Senior Education Manager to coordinate partner identification, recruitment, and training. Mapping and directing geographical coverage, planning and administration of all capacity building sessions in the Free State.
- Content Development: Contribute to the development of training and resource material. Oversee warehousing and distribution of materials.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitor progress by collecting, consolidating, and reporting on reach data, materials, and implementation. Conduct regular site visits.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Support the development of strong relationships with government and other partners.
- Research: Coordinate the formative research process and report on results of data collection within the province. Working closely with Sesame Workshop South Africa and New York staff to liaise with external research agency.
- Reporting: Monitor and report on implementation in line with the project plan. Prepare monthly reports to measure, analyze and communicate progress/ outcomes against agreed project plan.
REQUIREMENTS
- A university degree in one of the following fields is required: education, early childhood development, psychology, sociology, human development, family studies or another relevant technical field.
- A minimum of five years of professional experience in programme planning, management, and/or research in education, particularly in relation to play-based early learning approaches for children birth to 6 years, is required.
- An affinity for philanthropic work and making a difference in the lives of children.
- Highly analytical with ability to think strategically and provide insightful technical advice.
- Good user level proficiency in MS Office packages and web-based communication tools.
- Highly developed interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills in English.
- Willingness to travel and work outside normal office hours.
