The Community Organisation Resource Centre (CORC) supports the social, strategic and administrative practices of urban poor communities linked to FEDUP and ISN. CORC’s support includes savings, data collection, peer-to-peer learning exchanges, community-based planning for projects and engaging with government, funders and other actors.

CORC together with FEDUP, ISN and uTshani Fund forms the South African SDI Alliance which pioneers people-centred development initiatives by and of the poor. In 2002 CORC was registered with the Department of Social Development of the Republic of South Africa as a nonprofit organisation (017-659 NPO) with offices in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

 

 

Job Title: GIS and Data Support Person
Location: Durban
Employment Type: One year contract

Responsibilities:

  • ​To provide technical support in the collection of community led data.
  • To provide grassroot (settlements) social support in a data collection processs.
  • Will be required to engage with diverse population groups
  • To give technical advice to local CBOs and informal settlement networks and other relevant stakeholders according to their GIS needs.
  • To capture and analyse a range of geographical data using GIS systems in order to help organisation’s partners (municipality and informal settlements) make long-term plans.
  • To use a range of GPS tools in the field to capture the location of ‘assets and services’ such as pathways, street lights, flood zones, water points, toilet services etc.
  • To undertake desk-based data capture (digitising) to convert paper maps to GIS datasets
  • To produce GIS output including maps, map books
  • To compile timely and accurate reporting.

Requirements:

  • Relevant 3 year tertiary qualification i.e. National Diploma or Degree in Geographic Information Systems or Information Technology or equivalent qualification
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Proficient in Windows, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and Internet
  • Competency in at least one data analysis software (most preferably STATA)
  • Extensive knowledge of the ESRI products
  • An understanding of the role of GIS in the development and spatial planning
  • Performing spatial analysis, data management and interfacing GIS with relational databases.
  • At least 3 years practical experience in informal settlement upgrading and data related work. Inherent requirements of the position:
  • Excellent organizing and co-ordination qualities with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivated and resourceful
  • Able to operate successfully under tight deadlines and time pressures.
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively within the eThekwini Metro area
  • Ability to work non-traditional hours which may include weekends from time to time
  • Have good planning and organizing skills, with good analytical, and negotiation skills, administrative skills.
  • Have good report writing and workshop facilitation skills
  • Experience in NGO environment
  • Valid motor vehicle drivers license (Code 8 or 10) with at least 3 years driving experience. (a driving competence test will be part of the interview).
